The Government-led Disability Confident scheme is creating a movement of change, encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people.

The scheme is built on three levels, two of have been achieved by the Hospice:

  • Level 1 Disability Confident Committed
  • Level 2 Disability Confident Employer
  • Level 3 Disability Confident Leader

Janet Simkins, Director of Human Resources said “As a hospice in East London we are proud that our staff represent our diverse local community. When people feel valued and confident they give their best and that of course shows in the care that our patients and visitors receive when they come to the hospice, at a time when they are at their most vulnerable.

Janet continues: “Embracing diversity and inclusivity is at the very heart of our ethos, and is reflected in our policies and procedures as we recruit, develop, and retain staff. Ensuring fairness and equality for all employees, so they feel safe and supported in the workplace, regardless of their characteristics or needs is at the forefront of all we do.”

“We look forward to progressing through the scheme and achieving Disability Confident Leader (Level 3) status.”
