Role Overview:

Responsible to: Day Hospice Team

Volunteers on Escort Duty assist patients who need help and support with entering and exiting the ambulance using different aides as well as supporting those in wheelchairs.

Key tasks:

  • To escort day hospice patients between the Hospice and their home, travelling on the hospice minibus, in the company of a MIDAS trained driver. Most journeys will be to bring patients into day hospice, but on occasions volunteer escorts will be asked to accompany patients into the hospice for an out patient appointment
  • Assist in getting patients into the ambulance
  • Ensure seatbelts are worn at all times (unless the patient has a seat belt exemption from their GP)
  • Assist the patient into their home if they are on wheelchairs/walking aides
  • Both driver and escort will be responsible for the patient’s welfare and safety whilst in the minibus
  • Chatting to patients on their journey

Skills and qualities required:

  • Able to follow instructions
  • Happy to talk to patients

Time Requirement:

  • Weekly commitment of 2 hours minimum

Training:

  • Completion of mandatory STJH training

Qualifications required:

  • DBS check
