Feedback

St Joseph’s Carers Service helps support unpaid family carers in East London. This volunteer role will give you the opportunity to befriend and support others in your local community.

The service offers free respite for unpaid family carers in the community, where a volunteer will sit with the patient for a few hours providing companionship, while their carer has a break. Our volunteers also provide emotional support for unpaid carers, helping to reduce isolation.

St Joseph’s celebrates the diversity of its local communities and actively welcomes applications from volunteers who reflect this diversity, as well as those who speak locally-spoken languages.

While not essential for the role, we are also particularly interested in hearing from people who have personally experienced caring for a loved one.

To volunteer for this role, you must be:

  • Aged 18+
  • Empathetic and compassionate, with excellent communication skills.
  • Complete an interview and relevant criminal record check.
  • Complete two days of training.
  • Be willing to commit to a maximum of up to 4 hours a week for at least 6 months.
  • Attend monthly group supervision for 1.5 hours.

We will next be training new volunteers in January 2024, see below for all upcoming Carers Service training dates. Volunteer training takes place at the Hospice in the Education Centre, from 9am to 5pm:

Friday 29th September 2024
