Suzy’s Story

A Tower Hamlets local, Suzy has lived in the area for over 20 years. She first became connected with St Joseph’s when she signed up as a Compassionate Neighbour, supporting people in the local community dealing with loneliness and isolation.

She really enjoyed this role and volunteered for some time but when she started university it became harder to juggle everything, especially with being a mum too.

“People in my area, Tower Hamlets, are in two categories. Either they know about St Joseph’s Hospice because they’ve been involved, or they haven’t, and they think it must feel sad here. But it’s not sad, it’s warm and positive and people are really given patient-centred care.”

Suzy was keen to stay connected with the Hospice, so she spoke to our Volunteering Team about other opportunities and soon became one of our Drinks Trolley Volunteers which she absolutely loved as well as it’s another really social role.

More recently, Suzy returned to us at St Joseph’s Hospice for a two-week placement as part of her Adult Nursing degree at City St George’s, University of London. Now in her second year, they’ve been learning all about patient-centred holistic care and Suzy says her placement here gave her the chance to put everything into practice.

Suzy started each day on placement arriving St Joseph’s arriving early at 7.30am and spent her time supporting patients on Lourdes Ward. Every day was different, while much of her work focused on pain management, she says the heart of her role was helping people feel as comfortable as possible and making sure they could have the best day.
