Namaste care

Support for people living with dementia
Namaste is a Hindu term meaning ‘to honour the spirit within’. Namaste Care is a person-centred programme designed to improve the quality of life for people living with advanced dementia.

Namaste care offers sensory activities in a safe and comforting environment. It centres on understanding the things that people like and enjoy and which make them feel happy and relaxed, so that these activities can be personalised, meaningful and engaging.

Our trained Namaste volunteers visit people in their own homes; nursing / care homes; day centres; hospitals, or at the hospice.

Evidence shows that Namaste Care can improve the quality of life and wellbeing for people living with dementia, and also benefits family members.

How can the Namaste care service help?

Our Namaste Care Team will assess an individual’s needs and identify how the person and their family might benefit from this programme.

Our trained and supervised volunteers visit people regularly to provide Namaste care in their own homes; in nursing and care homes; in hospitals; and in hospices.

Namaste volunteers may carry out various activities such as:
  • offering gentle touch, e.g. through hand massage
  • playing favourite music
  • making a memory box
  • reading favourite books/poems
  • encouraging gentle movement
How to access the service

St Joseph’s Hospice offers Namaste Care in the East London boroughs of City of London, Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets. It is a FREE service.

If you know or provide care for someone living with dementia in these boroughs, you can access this service on their behalf.

UPDATE 1st April 2020: Unfortunately, in the light of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Namaste Care Service at St Joseph's Hospice is temporarily suspended until further notice.

Please note that you can still make referrals during this time, but be aware that all new referrals will be on hold until such time as we can once again make home visits and place volunteers. Meanwhile we will endeavour to keep in touch by telephone / letter / email with all families referred to us
