A shop is at the top of our Christmas list

We've made a short film calling for a generous local business owner or landlord to donate a shop premises so that we can sell donated goods to the community in order to help sustain the hospice.  We’d love a “pop up shop” for a few weeks or months, or a shop itself for year-round retailing of donated goods for charity.

St Joseph’s has been on Mare Street for over 113 years, providing excellent care to local people at the end of their lives or with life limiting conditions, both within the hospice and in the community. It has a long and proud trading history, helped by the generous donations of pre-loved goods that are sold at their jumble sales, which take place three times a year. These sales help towards the running costs of the hospice and benefit local people who come along in their hundreds to buy good quality items at affordable prices.

As a result of this generosity, we are in the fortunate position of having a huge amount of stock, and not enough space for it. We need both a short term solution with the cold weather months coming, and a more long term solution with a fixed shop presence.  So we’re looking for our first ever permanent charity shop, or a temporary “pop up shop”, if there’s a vacant property anywhere from Bethnal Green to Hackney Central. As a registered charity, we don’t have the venture capital available to secure the lease of a vacant shop. That’s why we’re asking for your help.

Tony McLean said, “As the new Chief Executive I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by local people. Selling donated goods is an important way for us to raise much needed funds, but we simply have run out of space to store it. Top of our Christmas list is a retail outlet.  But we provide a community service to people struggling, especially with the cold weather, who need to buy inexpensive warm clothing.  A pop up shop from now until next February would work too.  We hope that a generous neighbour may be able to help us.”

If you have an empty premises of around 500 to 1,000 square feet in good repair, that you would be willing to donate, please contact Fundraising 020 8525 3200 or email fundraising@stjh.org.uk.
