Ash Wednesday and The Season of Lent
This Wednesday 18th February is an important day for Roman Catholics and other Christians around the world. It is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the penitential season of Lent.
Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, and reflection, which ends with the celebration of Easter Sunday. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and was tempted by Satan. Lent is a time when the Church asks its believers to set aside time each year to imitate Jesus by practising prayer, fasting, and penance in order to focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.
There will be a special Mass on Wednesday 18th February at 3pm in the Chapel at St Joseph’s Hospice, where ashes will be distributed.
All are very welcome to attend, so please come along.
