Our Day Hospice Conservatory Renovation is complete!

As of early April, the refurbishment works on our Day Hospice conservatory have been completed!

Thanks to the support of our community, our patients can now safely enjoy this beautiful space, just in time for the summer months.

The new conservatory space

We are delighted to report that the newly refurbished conservatory area within St Joseph’s Hospice’s Day Hospice is now open again for the enjoyment of our patients and the staff who support them.

Our Day Hospice was built twenty years ago as a space for patients to visit for day care, psychological support, therapies such as physiotherapy and complementary therapies, fun activities which build rapport between patients, and advice on issues such as medication, housing and benefits.

The Day Hospice area includes a glass conservatory to allow in light and give patients and staff beautiful views across the Hospice garden. However, the glass roof above the conservatory was very hard to access for cleaning, and over time we began to see significant water damage inside and outside the building caused by clogged gutters and inadequate drainage’ leading eventually to flooding.

Various attempts to fix the problem failed, and by early 2025 we knew we would have to replace it.

We worked with an architect to design a modern replacement that would address these problems, and improve Day Hospice patients’ experience and, thanks to the generous support of our community, the building works began at the end of 2025.

The glass roof has been removed and replaced with a tiled roof to match the existing roof. This will require much less maintenance and consequently save the Hospice money and time.

The roof of the conservatory is now tiled and level with the rest of the roofing

New floor to ceiling glass windows and new doors have been fitted to maximise natural light, also increasing Day Hospice’s energy efficiency and sustainability.

New lighting has also been installed to ensure the area will feel bright throughout the day and around the year.

Thank you

We would not have been able to complete this work without the support of The Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation and our other wonderful donors. From all of us here, thank you so much!
