You can bring compassionate care to families in East London living with life-limiting illness

Thi Hoa NguyenInternational Nurses Day falls on the 12th May each year, and this year’s celebration felt particularly meaningful as we celebrate our 120th year of service to the people of East London.

Every day, our nurses make a profound difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones during the most challenging times. Their care is inspired by love and a commitment to our community, and with your support, we can be there for everyone who needs us.

When Thi Hoa Nguyen was diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 cancer, her family had reservations about hospice care. Daughter Hong said “As a family, and being Vietnamese, we had preconceptions of what hospice care would entail and wanted to care for her ourselves. But how wrong we were!”

Your support made it possible for our nurses to provide such exceptional care that Thi became well enough to start chemotherapy. “It bought us an extra 7 months with her, and she got to meet my eldest son, who was born several months after her diagnosis.”

But what really made the difference were the countless thoughtful gestures your generosity enabled.

“Thank you for bringing our mum lavender wheat bags when she was in discomfort. Thank you for bringing in a bedside lamp because you thought she needed soft lighting instead of the bright lights. And thank you for throwing her an early surprise birthday party (pictured below) when we knew she would not make it to her next celebration. You were an extension of our (already large!) family.”

These moments of compassion and personalised care are what your support makes possible.

Your support will help nurses like Liz and Amanda be there for our community when it matters most.

Meet Liz, one of our Clinical Nurse Specialists in the community: “As a team, we have gone over and beyond for patients because we understand that we have one chance to get it right. People die once and it is those that are left behind that will feel it. Although we can’t take away the emotional hurt, we can do the practical things to help them to be able to best support their loved one and relieve some stress.”

Amanda, who is one of our Charge Nurses on St Michael’s Ward talks about her favourite thing about being a nurse at St Joseph’s: “We have the opportunity at St Joseph’s to focus on providing holistic, individualised care to each patient. Spending quality time with each patient and their loved ones, really getting to know them and their needs. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that values this level of individualised care, which really enhances both the patient’s experience and our work environment.”
