120th Birthday Appeal
2025 marks 120 years of outstanding care and 120 years of wonderful support from our community.
Did you know it costs £15,000 each day to cover the costs of running our wards and caring for people in their homes? We are aiming to raise £15,000 to fund a full day of compassionate care for everyone who needs us across East London.
Make a Birthday gift today and help pay for a day of Hospice care.
St Joseph’s Hospice exists today because of the generosity of the East London community.
From the local benefactors whose donations at the turn of the 20th century funded the beginning of the Hospice, to the anonymous gift of our Mare Street building in 1905, we couldn’t do what we do without the generosity of our community.
Today, the work we do is so vital that we receive funding from the NHS to help us to do it. However, this funding only goes so far.
Your generosity means that we can do so much more. It means that we can be there for local families facing a life-limiting diagnosis. Families like Lauren’s.
Lauren and Palmiro
Lauren’s connection to the Hospice runs deep, first learning of the Hospice at a young age when her grandparents received support. This left a distinct impression on her family, especially her father Palmiro, who supported the Hospice for many years.
But life took an unexpected turn in 2015 when Palmiro was diagnosed with lymphoma. It was during this time that Lauren became truly aware of just how special the Hospice is.
Sadly, after 18 months of relentless treatment, Palmiro’s illness had progressed and there was nothing more that could be done. It was then that Palmiro discussed next steps with his family and that he wanted to come to St Joseph’s Hospice for his final days.
Lauren recalls the compassion and dedication of the staff at the Hospice and the peace that gave to the family knowing he was in such good hands.
“The staff were amazing, they treated Dad as if he were their own family. It lifted the stress, took the pressure off and we could confidently hand it over to the staff – it allowed us just to be there as a family. I always think of it as such a special place. It’s almost like I feel a part of the Hospice – like you’ll always be part of the family.”
Today, Lauren’s experience fuels her passion for the work carried out at St Joseph’s. She understands the importance of funding to ensure such care remains available for others. Continued support is essential in securing the future of St Joseph’s Hospice so that more families, like Lauren’s, can face life’s most difficult moments with comfort.
