St Joseph's History

In July 1900 five Irish nuns travelled from Dublin to Hackney to bring comfort and care to the poor and sick of London’s teeming East End. The Sisters were inspired by the words of the Foundress of their order, the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead, who expressed her desire that “the poor be given for love which the rich obtain for money”.

The nuns began their mission by visiting families in Hackney and Hoxton whose living conditions were often dreadful. The Sisters recognised the urgent need of a house which could be transformed into a properly equipped hospice where patients could benefit from care and good surroundings.

In 1903 they were gifted a property on Mare Street in Hackney which remains the site of St Joseph’s.

Throughout its long history St Joseph’s has never stood still but has always looked to the future, extending and improving its services for the benefit of patients. The East End has continued to evolve and so too does the hospice which serves it.
