About St Joseph's Hospice

St Joseph’s is a charity providing a team of specialist doctors, nurses, social workers and other skilled staff and volunteers, to provide care for anyone with serious and life threatening conditions, both in the hospice and in patients’ homes. In-patients at St Joseph’s enjoy some of the most modern facilities in Europe, designed to accommodate the diverse needs of the many communities we serve. We work together to meet the needs of all patients with cancer and other life limiting illnesses like heart failure and Motor Neurone Disease, as well as the needs of their families and carers.

What we do
Most People with a serious illness prefer to remain at home if they can. The St Joseph’s Hospice Community Palliative Care team of nurses, doctors and social workers works with GPs, district nurses and other professionals to care for people in their own homes wherever possible in the City of London & Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets.
We can care for patients from those three boroughs as well as Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Islington, Redbridge and Waltham Forest, in the three wards at St Joseph’s. All our services are provided free.

We aim to provide care which is culturally and religiously sensitive. To this end we offer 24/7 bilingual advocacy and translation services.

How we can help
Our team of specialist staff can help patients, their families and carers in many ways. This goes beyond the essential pain and symptom control by doctors and nurses. Patients also have access to our social workers, physiotherapists, complementary therapists and members of the chaplaincy team – taking into account patients and families’ psychological, social and spiritual needs as well their physical ones.

Some patients may come into the hospice for respite care to help stabilise their condition and allow their carers a period of rest. Some come for the last days of their lives.

At our Day Hospice we offer patients the chance to relax, have their symptoms assessed, engage in a variety of activities and take advantage of a number of complementary therapies like acupuncture.

Our specialist team of bereavement counsellors also provides ongoing support for families and carers. And our community information hub, Finding Space, can be used by anyone for advice, information and support on relevant issues.

St Joseph's Hospice has been here in Hackney since 1905, find out more about our history.
